................................................................................This Is My Blog!
Hello, I am Will Chaillou owner of Business Machines Service Sales Supplies. I've been servicing and selling Copiers, Fax Machines and Printers in Harford, Cecil and Baltimore Counties since 1983. I opened Business Machines in 1995, back then it was me (working out of the basement of my townhouse), my 1988 Chevy Astro Van and my tool kit. We have grown into Harford County's largest and most trusted Office Equipment Company, selling and servicing copiers, fax machines and printers. Our techs are on the road servicing from 8:30 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.
We also sell supplies for all makes and models of office equipment.
(08-15-2017) Why would I put a Copier Company in a 154 year old Victorian in Forest Hill?
My Office and Showroom are in a 154 year old Victorian, located in the Village District in Forest Hill Maryland at 28 E Jarrettsville Rd. Why would I put my copier company in an old house. I started in the copier business 34+ years ago working for Lehr Office Machine, located at the corner of Jarrettsville Rd and Rt 24 it was a nice job, Bob Lehr was a great guy to work for. That building was also a old victorian and I use to open the windows and I could hear the birds chirping and squirrels just doing their thing outside my window. Than Lehr got bought up and by Preston's in Bel Air but I remember saying to myself I'd love to come back Forest Hill someday. Fast forward 13 years My wife of 42 years Dawn and I purchased 28 E. Jarrettsville Rd. 10 houses down from the old Lehr Building and I moved my offices and repair shop into the 2 story garage building behind the house. Four years later we outgrew the garage and expanded the business into the house and that is where we have do business to this day. We opened a Copy Center several years ago and our prices are better than the Fedex Store, staples and Office Depot.
This picture taken today, a Gaggle of Geese walking by my office window one reasons I came back to Forest Hill, not to mention the Squirrels, Groundhogs, and Birds.
........Location Location Location
But from a business point of view the central location of Forest Hill (the red dot) right in the center of Harford, Cecil and Baltimore we can get to Elktonin the same amount of time as Towson or Dundalk. And for the most part we can take all back roads and miss the traffic.
This time of the year we get calls for poor image quality. (08-11-2017)
The number one reason for images that are missing part of the print is, HUMIDITY yes humidity,The paper sitting in the copier, fax, or printer is exposed to air. The air has moisture in it and even the air conditioner can not remove all of it. Some of that moisture is absorbed into the paper. Laser and LED based Copiers, Faxes and Printers put a charge on the paper to attract the toner. The print out will be missing part of the image like this one or will be very faint or have a gray background or all the above. So if this happens to you the first thing to do is change the paper with fresh paper from a unopened pack of paper.
One time I ask customers to put fresh paper in the copier to see if the problem goes away. They said they did but was still having the problem. So I drove out to their office with a fresh pack of paper, put some in and the problem went away. Then I would ask where they keep their paper and they showed me a closet with about 25 different color papers all opened and stacked on the shelf. So if you have damp paper problem the best thing to do is leave the paper in the original pack and retape it or in large zip lock bags or plastic bins.
Save the cost of a service call try fresh paper first! ..................................................................................................................
Doing business with local companies is the core of our business. (08-10-2017) We just delivered a NEW Okidata ES-9475 copier to Diversified Machining Inc. in Forest Hill Md 21050. It was nice dealing with Deanne (Office Manager) and Joe (Owner) at DMI. The ES-9475 is a 50 page per min. copier with print, scan, and fax.
We have been servicing their Toshiba ES-2330 copier for the past 5 years and they have purchased several desktop Multifunction Printers from us over that time.
We are thankful for their business! ...............................................................................................................
Just launched our Summer 2017 Flyer (08-09-2017)
We have added Canon, and Ricoh and are still selling Okidata, Panasonic, and Toshiba Copiers. ..................................................................................................................
When your customers become friends (08-08-2017)
I have been servicing copiers in Harford County for 34 Years. I worked at Lehr Office Machines on the corner of Jarrettsville Rd and Rt 24 for about 2 years then they were purchased by Preston's Stationery on Main Street Bel Air where I worked of 11 years. In 1995 I started Business Machines Service Sales Supplies. I just delivered a Okidata CX4545 Multifunction Copier on Thursday August 3rd to Jarrettsville Furniture. I serviced their copiers when I worked for Lehr, Preston's, and in February 1996 they called me to service their copier and they are still my customer today. I have really come to like Gail, and Rowland the owners. If you have never been to their store you should go. They have nice stuff there and it is A Destination Worth the Drive.
Loyal customers in an age when customer loyalty is a thing of the past.
.................................................................................................................. The colors that I print on my Multifunction Printer does not match my computer screen. (08-07-2017)
I get that colors are important, that's why we strive to be the color imaging experts. Some logos are a certain color teal or red or blue and it is important when sending proposals out.
I have a dual monitors setup on my desk, as you can see the colors are not the same on the two monitors. The one on the right shows the sand as being more yellow so which one is correct? You would think the one on the left since the sand to more tan in color, but I took the picture. The sun was setting in Havre De Grace and to the left of the sculpture and the sand had a lot of red clay in it. So if a customer only has one monitor and it is like the one on the left, the images would not match the screen. The funny thing is that I could adjust the screen on the left to make it match the one on the right but 8 months later ......
What you can do is go into Printer Properties and play with the colors until the image looks the way you want them to. Multifunction Printers are every compliant as in they always do what they are told to do, and unless the Drums are worn and or the Developer is depleted, you get what it was told to print. So again the trick is in the color adjustments within the print driver. So tweak the colors via the print driver to where you eye is happy that adjust the monitor so it matches the print till your eye is happy.
Now that is a big copier!!!! (08-04-2017) We are a Reseller of Canon & Ricoh Copiers For years I have avoided taking on a dealership because of the quotas. As in the regional Sales Rep calls you every month wanting to know why you did not make your quota. And how many machines are you going to purchase this month to make up for it. Then if the you don't purchase enough equipment they start saying your going to lose your dealership.
We joined a Co-Op and now I can purchase copiers directly from Ricoh and Canon, and purchase machines I never could before. I can now sell Production Black Only and Color copiers up to 95 pages per minute. The best part is that my cost is lower than what the manufacturer was offering me if I became a dealer. Even better still is no quotas! ..................................................................................................................
Black & White Vs. Color (08-02-2017)
If you are sitting in church and you are looking through the bulletin, which of these images would get your attention? We live in a world of color even the newspaper has got color images, like we read the newspaper anymore. Have you ever seen a website that does not use color, I haven't but I'm sure someone has one. My thinking is that GOD created color and He is pleased when humans come up with great stuff like color copiers. Did you know that by taking Cyan(blue-ish), Magenta(red-ish), Yellow and Black toner you can make every color known to man.
The number one concern customers have about color copiers is the price. The price of color copiers has come down, I just priced out a 25 page per minute color copier and a 25 ppm black & white copier and the b&w machine cost me $112.33 more than the color. I sell Toshiba, Canon and Ricoh and this is pretty much the same across the board.
The next concern customers have is the the cost of making color images and that their employee will be making prints of their grandkids or running off color flyers for their yardsale this weekend. Color copiers can be set up so that everyone can run black images and only authorized persons can make color or everyone can do color but the have a pin number and copier keep track of who printed both in black and color.
God created people to react to color, so use it !!!
How is Business Machines Service Sales Supplies is like a HOT DOG Company? (08-01-2017) I was shopping in a food store the other day and I was in the hot dog section and I saw the Hebrew National Hot Dogs. Every time I see their logo I think of their slogan. We answer to a higher authority. That is how I have ran Business Machines from day one.
Before starting the company I had been praying for two years with my wife Dawn about starting Business Machines. Then I lost my job, a glad recipient of downsizing. The two guys I worked with called and wanted to go into business together. So for about a week at the very beginning I was thinking about going into business with them. We would have been the dream team the three of us were top notch copier techs. with about 80 years experience between us. But when we sat down to discuss the nuts and bolts of who was going to do what. They told me the I had to leave that Christian stuff at home. For me that was the deal breaker and a very sad day for me! I still think they are two of the best Technicians I have ever worked with but I am a follower of Jesus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I answer to a higher authority. .................................................................................................................. New or Refurbished that is the question. (07-27-2017)
In the 22 years I have been in business about 80% of the office equipment I have sold has been Off-Lease (refurbished). We buy copiers, fax machines and printers from off-lease machine depots, service them if needed, replace the consumables, clean them and sell them. A refurbished machine sells for 1/2 the price of a new one. For me and the customer it is a win win, I make more profit and the customer gets a machine for 1/2 the price of new machine.
Some people are nervous about buying used but not me. This is the best reason I can think of to defend my position. I have a customer that purchased two machines from me on the same day. One new and one refurbished, the new one had 0 images on it and the refurbished about 80,000 images. 1 year 6 months later, the new machine which is there primary machine has 200,000+ images and the refurb. about 110,000. Most of the refurbs have less than 1 year's worth of work on them and about 7 to 10 left years of good reliable service to go. It is not out of the norm for me to work on a refurbished machine I sold 15 years ago. Sometimes I get that real good deal like the current model Okidata MPS3537 with less the 400 images on that is sitting on my showroom. Why spend more then you have to? Refurbished a good deal for Me and You!!!
Old school Tech! (07-26-2017) I am a old school technician as in I think you should keep a Printer and or Copier running until it has to be replaced. It is good for the environment and your and good for your bottom line. A good rule of thumb is when you get to the point that you climb on the desk to kick the printer or walk back to your desk cursing the copier it is a good time to call BUSINESS MACHINES at 410-838-1227.
Here is a $50 off coupon on your next service call. Sometimes the fix is easier than you may think, sometimes it time to replace that old printer with a new Multifunction Printer but it is never a good time to climb on the desk with a skirt on and kick the printer. But I ain't judgin. .................................................................................................................. Multifunction Printer (Color):
The true cost of ownership (07-24-2017)
Like I said yesterday within
the customer base I have, the average office does about 30,000 images per year
and they keep their copiers about 7 years. So over the life of the copier they
will produce 210,000 images. If they run20,000 black images and 10,000 color images. The cost would be: 20,000 (black)
x $0.01 = $200.00 and 10,000 (color) x $.08 = $800.00 for a total of $1,000.00
per year. The total cost of images would be $800.00 x 7 = $7,000.00
New Vs. Off-Lease (refurbished)
(refurbished) Copier:Let's say they paid
$4,000.00 for the Multifunction Printer & $7,000.00 for
the images, so the total cost
of ownership is $11,000.00 over 7 years.
Copier: Let's say they paid $8,000.00 for the Multifunction Printer &
$7,000.00 for the images, so the total cost of ownership is $15,000.00 over the 7 years.
Or go to the Staples, Office Depot or Amazon
Grade Copier customer paid
$700.00 for the Multifunction Printer. They run the same number of images
210,000 but the consumables are much more expensive with a average cost to the
customer for black of $0.04 (includes parts, labor & supplies)and for color
$.24 (includes parts, labor & supplies) per image. Do the math: $0.04 x
140,000 = $5,600.00 (Black) + $.24 x 70,000 (Color) = $16,800.00 , so the total
cost of ownership is $700.00 + $5,600.00 + $16,800.00 = $23,100.00. That is a big number!
But there are two more factor that the math does not show, the drums, toners and fuser last about 1/3 the amount of images resulting in down time. Then the fact that the machine will be trash in about 3 years and have to be replaced. But the Off Lease & New Office Grade Multifunction Printers I sell I have had my customers get as many as 4 million images on them depending on the model.
It is all in the Numbers, the Off Lease MFP Printer wins hands down!
Multifunction Printers / Copier (Mono): The true cost of
ownership, It's all in the numbers! (07-24-2017)
I have customers who have purchased both new and Off-Lease Multifunction Printers from me. The average office
does about 30,000 images per year and they keep their copiers about 7 years. So
over the life of the copier they will produce 210,000 images. If all the images are black images the cost per
page is about $0.01 per page (includes parts, labor & supplies), so the
cost of doing the 210k is $2,100.00 over the seven years.
New Vs. Off-Lease
Copier: Let's say they paid $4,000.00 for the
Multifunction Printer & $2,100.00 for the images, so the total cost of
ownership is $6,100.00 over the 7
New Copier: Let's
say they paid $8,000.00 for the Multifunction
Printer & $2,100.00 for the images, so the total cost of ownership is $10,100.00
over the 7 years.
Or go to the Staples, Office Depot or Amazon etc.
Consumer Grade Multifunction Printer:Again let's say they paid $700.00 for the machine. They run the same number of images
210,000 but the consumables are much more expensive with a average cost to the
customer of $0.05 (includes parts, labor & supplies). So that $700.00 machines cost $0.05 x 210,000 = $10,500.00 + $700.00 = $11,200.00 over the 7 years But there are two more factor
that the math does not show, the drums, toners and fuser last about 1/3 the amount of images
resulting in down time. Then the fact that the machine will be trash in about 3 years and have to be replaced. But the Off Lease & New Office Grade Multifunction Printers I sell I have had my customers get as many as 4 million images on them depending on the model.
It is all in the Numbers, the Off Lease MFP Printer wins hands down! ................................................................................................................
What is a LED array? (07-21-2017)
The new Okidata Copier, Faxes and Printers all use a LED array instead of a laser. Using a LED array instead of a laser is part of the reason the Okidata devices print unbelievable color images. The LED array allows Oki to put pinpoints of light onto the drum. Another benefit is the the array has no moving parts. The laser unit in copiers has a motor with mirrors attached to it that spins at about 100,000 per minute. Than that motors fails often enough where copier dealers exclude it from being covered under their Service Contracts. I found the info below on their website.
LED, or light-emitting diode, is a type of semiconductor element that gives off light.
The Difference between LED and Laser
LED printers are characterized by offering high-speed, high image quality printing in a simple structure not possible with laser printers.Laser printers have a single laser beam as a light source that is divided by mirrors to send light to the image drum, so the internal structure is complex and the actual printer body is often large as well. Compared to this, LED printers send light directly to the image drum, so they can be designed without mirrors and a shorter distance to the image drum, which reduces the size of the printer body. In addition, the inside structure is simple, so maintenance is also simple.
Summary of LED Print head
Electrophotographic technology-based printers are widely used as a printer or copier in the office, for example, methods uses an LED printhead as a light source for writing by the electrophotographic printer.In 1979, we successfully brought into practical applications an electrophotographic printer adopting LED for its light source, in collaboration with NTT. Since then, OKI Data has been engaged in technical development designing, manufacturing, and selling of LED printheads in pursuit of bringing world-leading printers into practical applications.In 2006, we developed a device (epitaxial thin film LED array), which unites LED and LED Driver IC using the epitaxial thin film bonding technology, and made a product out of this new LED printhead. This helped make the head structure much simpler and realize the more compact yet more reliable printhead than ever.OKI Data constantly pursues creation to deliver products based on our original technology that can satisfy our customers.
I do both Service and Sales at Business Machines and this one I always answer as a technician.
I WOULD NOT OWN A COPIER THAT WAS NOT UNDER CONTRACT !
Why you ask because todays copiers are not like they were 34+ years ago when I got in the business. They are a computers, fax, printer and a copier all rolled into one. Then throw in COLOR and now you have 4 drums, 4 developer units, 4 toner hoppers not to mention everything else that is in there. I as a tech. I dread when a customer does not have a contract and I have that worst case job where it takes me 10+ hours at $125 per hour to track down a problem and fix then throw in hundreds of dollars in parts.
I WOULD NOT OWN A COPIER THAT WAS NOT UNDER CONTRACT !! But that is just me.
There is something wrong with my Multifunction Copier
/ Printer I can’t print. (07-19-2017)
This is the
most frequent network related complaint we get from customers. We in turn ask if they can print from any
computer. Most of the time they say we can print from all the computers except Sally’s. And on a few
occasions they say we can not print at all.
This is what I do to narrow down the problem.
1)If any of the
computers in the network prints the printer is not the problem. Printers or
print options in copiers always do what they are told unless they can figure
out what they are told.
So if the right info is sent to the right
place they always obey. I have seen IT
guys use the
same IP address for a new machine and the machine
they are replacing. The problem is that
If they do not delete all the old print
drivers from all the computers some programs over ride
the default printer setting. They use last
used protocol as in if you used the Sharp printer last
had the same IP address as the new Toshiba the information goes to the correct
Toshiba speaks Toshiba not Sharp and the printer locks up because it does not
Sharp. I have seen computers with the same
print job in the print queue 15+ times.
So what to do? A)So check the Print Queue of the computer that can’t print if it is loaded with print jobs delete them.
B)Check the IP
address in the print driver and check if another computer
are the same IP, if not change the IP address in the non printing
C)If IP address is the
same delete the print driver and download a new o from the manufactures web
site. Now try to print if it does all is well. 2) If none of the
computers can print check the following.
A) Is network the is down check for a bad router, loose
wire or bad switch The computers are not able to see the Copier.
B) The print driver is on the server and the
server is down. Check the server.
C)This is the least
likely: print option in the copier has
gone up. Before we swap the printer board we will test the copier with our laptop and set up a
mini network or use a crossover cable. If it works the copier is good.
................................................................................................ Creases in the paper! (7-18-2017)
The number one cause of creases in the copy paper is a bad fuser. The heat or press roller is either covered with toner, the press roller sleeve is bunched up or coming off or in some machines theheater belt is torn. Any of the above call a Copier/Printer repair company like Business Machines 410-838-1227.
................................................................................................ Paper jams in my copier. (7-17-2017)
The jam could be the top, middle or bottom trays. If you can feed paper from one tray, but not from a another tray it narrows down the problem down to tray X.
The most common causes of jams in a copier, printer or fax is dirty feed tires or roller. Some manufacturers call them tires and other call them rollers. If you pull the paper out and look inside the machine the roller are located just above the paper. As a rule they are gray or black, but I have seen blue, red or white rubber used. You can clean them with a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol. Your roller may look the the rollers in the pix below.
Another frequent cause of jams is a small piece of paper or a paperclip or french fry stuck in the paper path. Yes I have even found a french fry in the paper path. If a jam occurs and the paper is crinkled like the the paper in the pix below. Look for something in the paper path.
If cleaning or if you can not find the french fry in the paper path call me @ 410-838-1227 if in the Harford County Md area. ................................................................................................
What a printer with white toner? (07-14-2017)
I love new tech stuff and this is just cool.
The Pro8432 digital printer is built on the long
tested 11x17 series printers Oki has been
selling and improving upon for years now.
Great for doing one off's and for long runs.
The Pro8432WT produces up to 11x17 digital heat transfers. Great for textile merchants and garment decorators with vibrant, color-rich graphics on both light and dark garments, hard goods and promotional merchandise. Compact in size but powerful in production, the Pro8432WT is easy to operate and eliminates the cumbersome processes typically associated with screen printing.
The Pro8432WT with its white toner and single-pass print technology, saves time over other digital transfer printers without sacrificing the color palette afforded by spot color screen printing. The Pro8432WT is a workhorse, producing 8 Transfers per minute color 8.5”x11” (6 per minute at 11”x17”)
There are two types of lease that are most often used
in the Office Equipment Industry.
Fair Market Value (FMV) = At the end of the lease you can buy the copier
Market Value. As a rule about 20 – 25% of the purchase price price of the
$1 Buyout = At the end of the lease you can buy the copier
The lease payment is between $10 and $20 per month higher.
Which is best?
The $1 is good if you are like me. I squeeze every last drop out of everything I buy. A copier if it is the
correct machine for the customer will last 10 year or more.
I have seen salesmen sell a customer a desktop copier when the customer needed a office grade machine. Why because they are just making a sale and not asking the right questions to know what the customers real needs are. Then I come in as the tech and the customer is all jacked up because the machine keeps breaking. I have customers that purchased copiers 15 years ago
and the machine won’t die and as long as I can get parts I’m ok with fixing it. Unless the repair exceeds the value of the machine.
The FMV is good if you are a growing business and you
will need more machine in
3 to 5 years. Or if you just like the peace of mind
of having a new copier.
But new Multifunction Printer break too.
When you have a lease who owns the Copier?
In a lease, the copier is still owned by the dealer or
company that issued the lease.
it’s a third party (bank) who holds the note and not the dealer.
Summer Time Blues! (07-12-2017)
I hate to beat a dead horse but I have over the years I have harped about having surge protectors on Copier, Faxes, Printers and
A church we service called me Friday and said have
lost all network connection
due to a power surge. We insist on surge protection on
equipment we sell and
have under service contract. Now their copier is fine because it has a surge protector on it but the network Is down.The sad thing is that this is the second time this
happened to this customer.
Do your self a favor buy a surge protector, but buy a
real surge protector.
APC and ESP are two good companies. This summer we have
had to replace
about 6 surge protector that the copier was plugged in to but the copier was not
damaged. APC and ESP
both replaced the surge protector for free. The ESP
surge Protector below
will protect the fax line, Ethernet line and 120v
line coming into the copier/
multifunction printer it is connected to. We sell them
call us 410-838-1227.
..................................................................................................... When I make copies the paper is very hot? (7-11-2017)
Laser and LED copiers, fax machines and printers all have
section. In today's machines fuser have either a set of rollers or a roller and a belt . The heat roller or heater belt
toner and press
roll presses the toner on the paper. I started working on Copiers with the Heat Roller/Press Roller type of fusing system day one of working at Lehr Office Machines in Forest Hill Md. in 1983. Before my starting in the industry they used cold fusion where two steel roller crushed the toner on to the paper. After I left Lehr Office Machines and worked at Preston's Stationary in Bel Air I did see a couple cold fusion machines. They were junk and made poor images the roller would crush the paper, so the paper came out kind of glossy looking.
So back to the Hot Paper, The heat roller operates atapproximately 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Doing 1 or 2 images you do not notice it but, if you do a large stack of copies it
a while for them to cool off. So if you pick of paper that was just feed through 400 degree rollers it is going to retain the heat for a while. So if you have a Home Office type or a Office Grade copier like I sell, the process is the same. Melt the toner and press it on the paper ...............................................................................................................
Misfeed in Document Feeder (7-10-2017)
If you original misfeeds in the Doc Feeder Check below.
1) Look for a small piece of paper in the paper path. A good rule of thumb is always remove the misfed paper in the direction it would go when feeding. Pulling the paper backwards can cause it to tear, leaving a piece of it in the paper path then the next sheet runs into it causing it to jam. I have also had customers knock the paper sensor switch off (when pulling paper in the wrong direction)and then the machine thinks it has a paper jam, when there is no paper jam. If the paper path is clear go to step 2. 2) See the roller the finger is pointing at below? Clean it, the roller to the left of it and the pad below (on better doc feeders the machine will have a roller here) Clean them with rubbing alcohol. They get dirty from the toner or ink that rubs off the original. If cleaning them does not help they may need to be replaced. If your office is in Harford, Cecil or Baltimore Counties call me 410-838-1227.
Black line down when copy from the Doc Feeder. (7-07-2017)
What causes a Black Line down the page when you use the document feeder on your copier? First thing to do is look at the slit glass to see if there is any toner, white out, ink on it. Lift the Doc Feeder lid and look at the slit glass it is a small piece of glass next to the platen glass (see picture below). A dot on the slit glass will appear as a line on the copy, because the paper slides across the glass but the dot does not move, so it appears as a line. So save yourself a service call, take a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol and clean the glass. Sometimes the dotis so small you can barely see it so clean it two or three times. If you still are getting the line call a copier tech.
Now if the line happened when you copy from the platen glass, doc feeder or print then Call a Copier Tech.More than likely you have a scratch on the drum, a bad cleaning blade or a wear line on the heat roller. ................................................................................
The New Okidata MPS4242mcfx (7-06-2017)
As a tech/sales guy I like this copier. It is compact and sells for about 50% of what a 40 page per minute copier would sell for 3 years ago. It is considered a A4 machine which means it will copy up to 8.5x14 (legal) paper. A3 machines Copy up to 11x17 (ledger). If is breaks it is a easy fix and Oki parts are next day because they ship from New Jersey. MPS4242mcfx+

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why does your copier print black or blank pages When copying a check? (7-05-2017)
I found the above image on the a google search. Do you see the foil Security Square next to the signature line? That is the reason why the check image comes out blank, or solid black or I have even seen it come out with VOID VOID VOID down the page. If you need to copy the check you can cover the Security Square and then you will be able to copy it. When the newer digital copiers came out we did not know about this feature and thought something was wrong with the copier. The toshiba ES3530 copier did not have this feature but the ES3540 did. We sold a ES3540 to a customer and they called us saying when they copied a check the image came out blank. We tested a es3530and it was copying fine, then tried the ES3540 and sure enough they came out blank. It may be a pain in the but, but it might save your but if someone tries to copy your check someday.
Just got back from servicing a Refurbished Copier I sold a customer 11 years ago. The customer wanted to know if the machine was on it's last leg and should they replace it. I told him we had just put in a PM kit 74,000 images ago and at the rate of copying they do it should last another 5 years. Why would I say that and not just sell him another copier? Unlike most office equipment companies that are just in business to sell office equipment and they have a service department to support the equipment they sell. We are a service company that sells machines that we like and that will last our customers for years to come. + = 22 Years ago I took 12 copiers to the landfill expecting them to be recycled. They directed me up a hill and told me to push them out of the back of the truck. I can still see them in mind's eye, sitting in a heap out back of the truck. As I was pulling away a Front End Loader / Bulldozer looking thing comes up the hill and cover them with dirt. That day convinced me that buying off lease copiers and refurbishing them would be a business model I would stick with. Ever since that day when a machine is no longer serviceable we take them to GREEN MARBLE RECYCLING 1248 Ridge Rd Pylesville MD 21132. They recycle the metal and the plastic, and I sleep better!
I'm not sure when the first microline ML320 and ML321 came on the market. But I have been working on them I think as far back as the early 1980's. How do you know you have a GREAT machine? When you are still selling it new 30 something years later. I still have people call us to service and purchase them. Some older programs will not print to a laser printer so customers are still using them.
................................................................................................................................................. Do the lights dim in your office? (06-21-2017) This is a brown out.
Unlike blackouts, you still have power, just less of it. I have put a line monitor on a customers outlet and found voltage as low as 83 Volts. A brownout is the opposite of a power surge. Brownouts typically last from a few seconds to a few minutes .
What causes brownouts? There are 2 main sources of brownouts: external (outside your building) and internal (inside your building). External causes: Power grid problems (High demand and not enough electricity), Power failure at power plants and Intentional “throttling” of electricity during peak demand Internal causes: Too many electrical devices on a single outlet. Inadequate wiring for a large appliance (like an air conditioner, freezer or refrigerator) Bad wiring in the building. Are brownouts bad for your copiers, printers, computers (and other electronic appliances)? Yes!!!!! Don’t take brownouts lightly. The low voltage during the brownout can damage your Copier, Printers, Computer and other electronic devices.
Electronics are created to operate at x amount of voltage, so fluctuations in power either up and down can damage them. When your power comes back, I have seen the voltage go as high as 383 Volts (power surges). That spike can also damage your electronic devices in your office. Get a Good Surge Protector like a ESP. Look for a surge protector that has a guarantee that will pay for the repair or replacement if equipment is damaged. It is cheap insurance.
............................................................................................................................................. How safe is your
customers information? (06-13-2017)
If you trade in your copier ask for the hard drive.
Everything you ever copied, scanned and printed is written on that hard drive.
What is a IP Address
The IP address is like your postal address but for a
computer network. If two houses in the same state, same city, same street have
the same house address the post office does not know where to send the mail.
There are 4 sets of 3 digits, so if the address is 192.168.1.254, the 192 is
the State, .168 is the City, .1 is the street, .254 is the house number. This is how your
computer network knows where to send information.
I had a service call on Monday and the customer said their
IT Company had her call me. The reason,
they could not print was that their Multifunction Printer/Copier/Scanner must
have been damaged by a power surge. I went to the office with everything I
needed to replace the print option in the machine. But first I went through so
basic trouble shooting. See below.
1) Check the IP address in the copier/printer and found the address was 192.168.1.254 2) Got on a computer on the network and opened the Command Prompt. There I pinged the copiers IP by typing in ping 192.168.1.254 and I got a reply. Which is good it tells me the copier was receiving and sending data. I thought! Just to be sure I removed the printer cable from the copier. and pinged it again. I got a reply again??? This tells you that there is another devise on the network with the same IP address as the copier. This is called an IP conflict.
3) Checked the IP address in each computer’s print driver for the copier. One
had the copiers IP as 192.168.1.100 and the
other had it as 192.168.1.51
neither had it as 192.168.1.254 4) I pinged the 192.168.1.51 and got no reply. This
tells you that that address is not being used.
5) Change the IP address in the copier and both
computers print drivers to 192.168.1.51
One of the computers started to print right
off. The other did not, so I down loaded another print driver gave it the
192.168.1.51 IP address and it started to print. Then I deleted the old print
The real problem! More than likely a corrupted print driver. But
someone also got to changing IP addresses and got confused, adding to the problem.
How does a print driver get corrupted? This
can happen from down loading something from the internet and it in turn
corrupted the print driver. There are other reasons but this seems to be the most common.
............................................................................................................................................ Tis the season for power surges! (06-12-2017)
Electronics–in particular, Computers, Copiers, Printers, Fax Machines and Telephone Systems - are especially susceptible to damage from lightning and power surges. These devices are often connected to each other by various types of cables, providing a path that allows electrical surges to traverse across the network. The end result is that a single power strike can damage multiple devices at the same time. The $5 surge protector you can purchase at a discount store has no guarantee and is good for one surge (maybe) and if it does not work, oh well. You need real protection! Like a ESP Digital Surge Proctor model # D113Z6T. That come with a guarantee that if the copier, fax or printer that is plugged in to it is damaged by a power surge they will pay for the repair or replace the equipment (up to $75,000).
